The small structure was designed to provide additional guest space when needed while also serving as a home office during the work week. Sited at the rear corner of the lot, it was important to design a structure that would not be too imposing or overwhelming for the charming back yard area. Working closely with the client we developed an efficient floor plan that utilizes an abundance of natural light to bring a strong connection to the outdoor spaces surrounding the casita. The interior ceiling follows the line of the shed roof above, allowing for more volume in the living/kitchen area to ensure a generous feeling of space in an otherwise modest layout. Operable windows throughout the house will provide an abundance of cross ventilation during those desirable times of year and help strengthen the connection to the outdoors. Integral to the concrete foundation, we designed a retaining wall to enclose a small exterior patio and to help mitigate the rainwater runoff that occurs across this sloped backyard area. The natural wood siding will slowly patina over time and provide a soft and textured backdrop to the backyard.
